He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it
as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil
without protesting against it is really
cooperating with it.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Evidence concerning Al D’Amato’s past behavior and statements has led to one conclusion:

Al D’Amato, a non-elected official and a private citizen without official status in any political party,  has wielded excessive, inappropriate, and at times illegal influence over elections and on the conduct of government business.

While investigative reporting hasn’t been completely lacking since Mr. D’Amato entered the political scene, the shortage of in-depth coverage in print and broadcast media has led to at least moderate tolerance of his influence.  This must stop; pensions and salary increases should not be related in any way to campaign donations.  While it’s doubtful that reform legislation will be enacted any time soon, transparency in new and traditional media will help to rein in undesirable behavior.
